Nouns (Wed, 22/12/11)

Eleventh class

It was a night class. The energy was low. Everyone was starving.
OKAY! (wake up! *slaps face) it's presentation time. The first lucky group was Rahey's group. The group members were Pony, Hefa, Salina and of course Rahey.
They got Nouns and Articles as their topic. Here's what we all learned that day.
NOUN - a word used to name a person, animal and thing. Eg. singer, goat and bus.
There are a lot of branches to nouns :
  • Gender nouns
  • Plural nouns
  • Possessive nouns
  • Proper nouns
  • Common nouns
  • Abstract nouns
  • Countable nouns
  • Uncountable nouns
  • Collective nouns
You can read the full explanation, how to use them in sentences and examples from this link, http://www.writingcentre.uottawa.ca/hypergrammar/nouns.html

After all that learning, we all played a game prepared by the group. You know how grammar can be so...a lil fun was needed.
The game was Snakes n Ladders, with some grammars in it, of course. We were divided into 2 groups and each round each group send a different representative, so it'll be fair. The game works like this. You throw the dice (which was handmade and huge!) and you pick 1 random question, grammar question to be exact. If you get it right, you get to move you piece but if you get it wrong, you don't  get to move. You can however, consult with you group but then you would only get to move less one spot than you dice mark. For example, your dice shows a five and you don't know the answer to the question so you consult with your group. When you get it right, you can only move 4 spots. Get it?? Good =D
So, anyway Group 2 (my group) WON!!!

Bye ;p

Young Shakespear?? (Tue, 21/12/11)

Tenth Class

Class that day was a bit fun and interesting. Miss Zu want us to put on our creative caps on and create a poem. The poem must have the line "I think I can..."
I personally groaned out loud when I heard the word 'poem', I hate hate hate stuffs that needs creativity. In the end, I just put my head down and get on with it.
Here it is

The rain is pouring,
The rain is wet,
The rain is cold, but
I think I can  weather it.

The holiday is near,
The people are gay.
The highways are packed, and
So are my assignments! but
I think I can handle it!

The sun is shying,
The lights are dimming,
The bell are jingling, and
I think I can hear Ho Ho Ho.

So, what do you think? You are not gonna vomit, are you?

Now, why did you go and hurt my feelings! *sobs
KIDDING!!
Gag all you want =p

Some of the poems my classmates wrote was really good and deep. Unlike mine. Haha.
Young Shakespears in the  making!!

After that, Miss Zu created a time capsule. It was just made of a piece of paper and random stapling. We're not gonna bury it like a real time capsule, so there's no need for a metal box or anything. Here's how it works. We placed a note each saying what we would like to take to the future into the paper bag and Miss Zu will open the bag only at the end of the semester. Each one of us will then read a note and try to guess whose it is. It is exciting. Now, I can't wait for this semester to end!

Night.

Again?? (Mon, 20/12/11)

Ladies and gents, it is my honour to say that once again
CLASS is CANCELLED!!

*wooh! oh yeah, oh yeah.....chicken dance!
No, I'm kidding. I actually slept through the afternoon and FORGOT about the 'pasar malam'! (night market).

What a bummer.

Yawn~ (Wed, 15/12/11)

NO CLASS!! =D

BUT

remember that movie 127 Hours?
We had to hand in the movie review =(
Thank God I've done mine!
=)

LCC (Tue, 14/12/11)

Ninth class

On this day we didn't have a class in a classroom like usual. There was a Language & Culture Carnival (LCC) from the 12th of Dec till the 14th of Dec. We happened to have a class on the last day of the carnival so, Miss Zu asked us to do 'something' about the carnival held.

There were a lot of things going on for the LCC. There were language booths set up at the Speaker's Corner and there were also some food stalls in front of the SL Block.

The 'thing' Miss Zu asked us to do was to make a food review of one of the stalls in SL and gather information from the  language booths.

The stall I chose was Madam Cecilia's stall. I believe the stall's name was Fabulous Food 1 Malaysia. True to its name, the stall did indeed sell foods that represents the races in Malaysia. For example, nasi lemak, roti canai, thosai, pudding, cakes and tarts and a variety of hot drinks. The prices were fairly cheap, in my opinion. Nasi lemak for RM1.20 is quite cheap, I think.

I did not buy the nasi lemak, instead I bought roti canai. The roti canai were originally priced at RM1.20 but by the time I bought it the price had already dropped to RM1.00 to my much happiness!

This is how it looked like in it's 'packaged'.
Very pretty, I must say! Haha

This is its contents. Doesn't that just look very appetising?? The roti canai comes with some vegetable curry, of course. The taste was okay for a cold roti canai =D
The ingredients for the roti canai, in case you want to try your hands on making it, were wheat flour, water, salt and ghee. For the vegetable curry: vegetable oil, onions, spices, water, coconut milk, salt and of course vegetables.

We then went to the Speaker's Corner to conduct some interviews with the booths people but sadly 2 out of the 3 booths, the Mandarin and the Arabic booths, had already closed. It was understandable since it was already late afternoon and it was also the last day of the LCC.

                                                 Proofs ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The only booth that were still running was the English Language Society (ELS) booth.Thank God!

Ok, firstly I just wanted to say that we were all gutted when there was only 1 booth left standing. Actually, deep down I think we all were kinda felt like 'YAY' since less booth equals to less interviews. Haha.
So, these were some of the guys that were running the booth. I did the interview with the girl in the black T-Shirt. Her name is Aiman (I think) she's a part 4. The info that I gathered after I talked to her was that their purpose for setting up the booth was to make the students more aware of the English language. They also informed me that they want university students to relive their childhood memories of Disney princesses, like Beauty and The Beast. She said they also had a face cut-out board of the Disney characters but that I cannot confirm since by the time we went there it was already late afternoon and they had closed the photography session. So, I didn't get to see that myself.

This was how their booth looked like. Pretty nice, huh? They won the Best Booth award, ok. I don't know if you can see the hamper they won but I'm telling, I am jealous =P
There you can see 2 pictures of Disney princesses stuck on both sides of the ELS poster. The wall was put to good use. It was packed with interesting information and stuffs.
Hand painting was also one of the activities that they carried out. I did not get my hands painted nor did my friends. But I have seen the art work on one of my friend's hand and it was quite nice, I must say! Cheap too. RM2.00 I think. The painter is brilliant. I've seen her at work.
The LCC poster that I 'stole' ;p
I hope you would feel like you were there by reading this entry!

Later.

127 Hours (Mon, 13/12/11)

Eighth class

It was more like watch-a-movie-class. haha. But, of course there's a learning outcome. By watching  a movie, we get to learn how to write a review essay, which was exactly our homework. The movie Miss Zu picked out (after some tedious technical problem, haha) was 127 Hours. I already have the movie but haven't watch it, That 's a good thing because otherwise I'll fall asleep! hehe.

This movie ladies and gents, are a master piece. No kidding.
127 Hours is a 2010 film based on a true story by Danny Boyle. James Franco plays as Aron Ralston (love him!!). The story is basically about a mountain climber who decided to go on a hike to Utah's Canyonlands National Park. After meeting a couple of girls that were lost and having a quick detour, Aron then continues into Blue John Canyon. This is where it all begins. On his way down into the narrow passage, a big boulder became loose and as Ralston was falling his arm somehow got sandwiched between the loose boulder and the  canyon wall. At first he tried shouting for help, but no one was there. He was trapped. Ralston then remembered that he didn't tell a single soul where he was going that day, hence he was on his own.

He tried every single thing that was possible with what ever tools and equipment he had with him to free his stuck arm. As the day goes by, his food and water diminished entirely and he was forced to drink his own urine. Aron brought a camera with him and he made a video log since he got stuck in the canyon. The video log became more and more desperate and Ralston also kept dreaming and hallucinates about the past and the future.

Five days had passed and he couldn't take it anymore. Ralston decided to cut his arm off. He broke his arm and by using his blunt knife, he freed himself. The hardship did not end there, I'm afraid. He had to scale down a cliff to get to a dirty water source  and he basically trow himself into the puddle. Ralston was eventually rescued when he managed to get the attention of a family on a hiking trip. He was then whisked away by a helicopter. The film ends by showing the real Aron Ralston and his family. At the very end it says that Aron now makes a point to leave a note whenever he goes anywhere alone!

I think the movie was brilliant. It captures human basic instincts to willingly do the unbelievable just to survive.
Do or die. Fullstop. If you were in his shoes, would you do what he had done? That kind of question never cease to leave my mind. All in all, this movie is worth spending your weekend on. Parents supervision are necessary since there are some gory scenes that even I could not stomach. Anyway, I hope this review will make you running to go and watch it youselves.

Go now, go!!

YES!! (Thu, 8/12/11)

Class cancelled, thank you very much!

Grammar... (Wed, 7/12/11)

Seventh class

Grammar sucks! (forgive me)
You, yes you, Grammar! For your information, you are my biggest obstacle!
I hate you. I loathe you. I despise you.

Why can't grammar be automatically installed into our brain?? WHY??

Can I cut this post short? This topic depresses me -.-

I'm afraid I have to keep on writing or I'm gonna be in trouble and no one wants trouble, right?
So... on this 'exciting' day we learnt about Regular and Irregular verbs.
This page is really good at explaining it http://www.rhlschool.com/eng4n6.htm can you answer the exercises??
There are hundreds and hundreds of regular and irregular verbs out there. Here are the lists of some of them.

Regular verbs : http://shakespeare-club.tripod.com/id29.html
Irregular verbs : http://www.englishpage.com/irregularverbs/irregularverbs.html

When I was scanning the lists, my reaction was like "Oooh, didn't know that!" hahaha
were your reaction similar?

Write to you soon. Bye!

Lights, Camera, Action!! (Tue, 6/12/11)

Sixth class

Drama class. I used to and will forever hate drama class. It's just not my forte. But I have to admit, they do bring you out of your shell. Even though, I am perfectly content to stay in my hard shell. What to do, the show must go on!

We were divided into groups and had to choose one-of-the-many P.Ramlee's movies and re-acted one or two scenes from it in English, of course. My group chose the movie Nujum Pak Belalang. I don't actually recalled if I've already watched it or not but the tittle is familiar.

Every Malaysian knows who is P.Ramlee and his amazing works. He's like Malaysian Elvis Presley, only he's an actor.

Su, Malin, Hefa and Taufik were in my group. They really knows the movie while I was a bit lost, but it was still manageable. There is a video of our performing, but I couldn't and forgot to get a hold of it. My phone's Bluetooth  is not working so I forgot to ask them to give me  the file by thumbdrive. Sigh~

In the end, all the groups were fabulous!
And the awards goes to, drum-roll please.....

Taufik : Best Actor
Nabila : Best Actress
Group1 : Best Group

P.S. that picture on the right is P.Ramlee and not Taufik! haha

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Callooh! Callay!

*Sigh! (Mon, 5/12/11)

Fifth class

Guilt is the word. Plus a dollop of shame and a huge splash of disappointment .

The story went like this. I was responsible to find a free class for our replacement class and i did found one in Block I. The Block was apparently full with Degree students but i thought there should be no problem since I'd already checked with the HEA but...........there was a problem.

After only a few minutes into the class there was another class waiting to enter. I was like "God, I knew it!!" I've been having bad feelings since I'd booked the class. I knew there was something wrong.

Miss Zu was actually the savior that day because she didn't really mind to cut the class short and kicked us out since she was busy and had to hurry (she's really busy!). I was really scared if they were all gonna blame me for messing up (hey, it was my first time booking a class!) but Miss Zu reassured me by saying "It's okay, Elya, I don't blame you."
I felt like crying, for goodness sake. Sigh.

She still managed to assigned us with some work to do despite the hastiness, haha.
Character Essay
That was what we were asked to write about. Just stick any picture you could find and write, or rather, create a story based on the person in the picture. For example, an athlete could be a sumo in your essay. Hehe.

Mine was rubbish, i just wrote and wrote without much thought. I'm still waiting for Miss Zu's thoughts on our 'creative' stories. Since we didn't get the essays back, I couldn't exactly tell you what I'd written (my classmates made 2 copies of  theirs!! whattt??) so, I'll just give you the summary of my essay.

The story was about my best friend, who is a Russian girl (fact) and after a while i grew suspicious of her behaviour. Surprise, surprise. Christina turns out to be a Christopher. My best friend is actually a guy!! (fiction) Here's the ridiculous part. Hahaha. I giggled so much when I wrote this down, after i found out the 'secret', I stayed by Christina's side, I mean Christopher's, and I helped him to get back on track. Finally, he became my BOYFRIEND!!.

Hahahahahaha (it's kinda gross)

BYE!! for now... (:

Jabberwocky?? O.O (Thur, 1/12/11)

Fourth class

NIGHT CLASS Y’ALL!!

Haha, sorry about that. it was my first night class so…yeah!!!
 woot woot!!

We were all exhausted when we arrived because we had KO just before that. We learned a new word that day though : BIZARRE
If you don’t know what it means, here is the full meaning from dictionary.com
"Markedly unusual in appearance style or general character and often involving incongruous or unexpected elements outrageously or whimsically strange odd."
(what does ‘incongruous’ means??) *shrugs shrugs

Basically ‘bizarre’ means strange, odd or weird.

On this night, we learnt about contextual clues. If you have no idea whatsoever about contextual clues, this link might help http://scc.losrios.edu/~langlit/reading/contextclues/intro1.htm
Understand it a lil bit better now? Good!

So, Miss Zu showed us a poem called Jabberwocky by Lewis Caroll. The poem didn't really makes sense to me since the language were old English BUT that's the whole point of contextual clues,  right? haha. How about you guys check out the poem yourselves and see if you an crack the meaning behind the nonsense poem! Here's the link for it http://www.jabberwocky.com/carroll/jabber/jabberwocky.html
Oh! My favourite part of the class was the “Callooh! Callay!” it's just a fun thing to shout about. Haha

Look what I found. >>>>
This is apparently THE MAN who wrote the Jabbewocky.
Handsome, no?? hahaha

Goodnight!! (or morning, afternoon, evening. Whatever time you’re reading this) =P

Saturday 3 December 2011

Field Trip!! (Wed, 30/11/11)

Third class
Miss Zu took us on a field trip, woooh!! Yes, for those who saw us we only went to the little clearings at the back of Block C (or maybe Block U, its very confusing please understand) but it is still considered as a FIELD TRIP. So yeah, WOOOH!!!

The mosquitoes also had their own little field trip with me -.- I still have the marks to prove it!

We did some speaking activities for which i would not go into further details but i think you get the gist of it. We basically have to speak with each other in English-like we are supposed to do in an English class-and just practice having a day-to-day conversation, i guess.

One particular topic that is still embedded to my mind is, football. Its a hard topic for a non-fanatic football fan.
(what a hypocrite!) haha

There was a class watching us but i pay no heed to that as the windows were tinted thus, i couldn't see their silly faces.
Here's some news for y'all. We JAC1102A class are U N T O U C A B L E.

Facts or Fiction?? (Tue, 29/11/11)

Second class

(We're supposed to have our first night class on Thursday, 24/11/11, but Miss Zu were busy or something so, NO CLASS) =D

What did we do that day?? Oh! We had to introduced our friend. It is not as boring as you all might think. More and more dirty little secrets were uncovered as the class went on as we had to tell 4 facts about our dear friend. But here’s the interesting part, amongst the facts there is a lie and we had to guess which one is which.

My partner was Izuwan. Yes, the tall one. Haha. So, here are some facts about him:
  • he's scared of riding a motorbike (weeeeeird)
  • he'd cheated in SPM! (tsk tsk tsk)
  • he hates liars
The lie about him was that he doesn't like to lie (really??)

I’m ALWAYS nervous to speak in front of an audience (you can safely bet that I’ll never work in an education field) so my hands were freezing and my legs just couldn’t sit still!!

My partner and I were the last to present and I could just feel the sense of relief flooded through my system. With THAT over and done with, I strolled back to my humble college and flopped on the bed!

Zzzzzzzzzzz ….

First Time for Every Thing, Right? (Wed, 23/11/11)

Now don’t go and scrunch up your lovely face at the sound of that. It might not be as Boring, Eeew and Lame as you might think. To be completely honest, I myself were SHOCKED when we were asked to create a blog. My face were scrunched and twisted in every possible way as I sat in class listening to our new ‘homework’ as a sign of my GREAT reluctance. It’s not that I have anything against blogs or bloggers, I actually salute them for finding the free time to write and decorate their blogs as interestingly as most of the blogs out there. I guess you can hold UiTM’s slooooow wifi connection as the source of my great reluctance :)

Ok, enough with this whining and moaning. It’s not like the blog would post by itself while listening to me complaining.

First class
It’s actually the second class because the first class was a holiday (yay!). I hope it’s right because if it’s not and Miss Zu DID actually meet us on the very first class then please kindly rewind your brain , stop and continue reading here.

The first time Miss Zu came into the class, the very first thing I notice was her headscarf fashion or ‘tudung’. You know, the kind that most young people wears (now, I’m neither saying only teenagers could don them nor saying Miss Zu is old because she is still in her prime). Not sure what they are called though. Shawl?? Pashmina??

I have no clue, maybe both of them are the same thing, don’t laugh! She looks nice wearing them anyway. Heeee …

Next! Her ACCENT. She opens her mouth and I’m like “WOAH!! Okaaaayyyy…” haha. I meant it a good way, by the way. It is nice to have a language lecturer that can actually speak and sound like a native.

Ooh, ooh!!!! I’m the class assistant!! LOL. ‘thanks’ guys for picking me -.- I just ‘love’ having the burden of making sure we have a class booked. If only the CLASS REP would be a little bit more HELPFUL. Haha.

This is it. I think it’s already far too long so…….BYE!

(NOTE: thank you to my friend Ruzanna Iskandar for letting me work in her room and use her oh-so-fast internet. Couldn't have posted this without you, girl!!)
